A system based on RFID devices from Sirit Inc. has been selected to upgrade operations on Uruguay’s only automated tollway. The automatic vehicle identification (AVI) system is a cooperative effort by Uruguay-based Telsis S.A. and Telectronica, a company which has deployed AVI systems throughout Latin America.

The system, which will use Sirit IDentity 5100 readers and transponders designed for long range, high speed vehicle identification applications, was selected by the Corporacion Vial del Uruguay, a government agency responsible for overseeing the country’s National Highway Concession program. In the first phase of the system’s deployment, 12 readers will be placed on Uruguay’s main highway, running between Montevideo and Punta del Este.

At least 20,000 transponders will also be distributed in this initial phase. When the full project is completed, by mid-2009, a total of 40 readers will be installed, connecting Uruguay’s entire road system with a single, centralized AVI system.

“What’s exciting about the installation is the fact that Uruguay will be using a single RFID system enabling the use of the existing infrastructure and paving the way to deploying solutions for a number of other applications, such as parking, heavy vehicle weight systems and truck identification,” says Edgardo Ventura, president of Telectronica.
